| Description | Ms van Zwieten is an Australian post-graduate research student in the Law Faculty at the University of Oxford. She completed the BCL with Distinction last academic year, and she now in her first year of research, on the M Phil program, under the supervision of John Armour, Lovells Professor of Law and Finance. Next year, she will continue her research on the D Phil program, which she anticipates completing in July 2011. She is spending some time at the Asian Law Centre, as a visiting doctoral student. Her research is on corporate insolvency law in India. Her current focus is the Sick Industrial Companies (Special Provisions) Act 1985, introduced to enable the revival of distressed medium and large scale industrial enterprises in India, and the subject of widespread criticism. Although only preliminary, the results of her research have already thrown up fascinating - and largely unexplored - connections between, on the one hand, the recent trajectory of India's insolvency laws, and on the other, India's central banking policies, and its judiciary. Her wider research interests are comparative corporate law, law and finance, and law and development. During the next academic year, she intend to spend some time in India, carrying out empirical and archival research. She believes that the Asian Law Centre is an ideal 'base' from which she can prepare for, and begin to evaluate the results of, her empirical research in India, before returning to Oxford in her final year to complete the doctorate. She is very interested in the work of the Asian Law Centre Centre, especially that which coincides with her own work (for example, Dr Godwin's work on bankruptcy law in China) |
