Attorney-General's Department Occasional Seminar Series
The Asian Law Centre regularly hosts seminars by leading scholars and practitioners on current Asian legal issues. These are high-profile events, which are regularly attended by scholars, legal practitioners and students.
This seminar series is proudly supported by the Attorney-General's Department.
Brown Bag Seminar Series
The ‘Brown Bag’ Seminars are held on alternate Wednesday lunchtimes. In this series, postgraduates and academics who are researching and writing on Asian legal topics present a 45 minute paper, followed by questions and discussion.
The paper can either be work in progress or a more polished presentation rehearsing a conference paper or article submission. The forum provides a collegial atmosphere where paper-givers are provided feedback from their peers.
The ALC Brown Bag Seminar Series is proudly supported by Blake Dawson Lawyers.
Asian Legal Dialogues
The Asian Law Centre 'Asian Legal Dialogues' was established by the Asian Law Centre in 2004. In this series, presenters discuss Asian legal issues in an Asian language.
The purpose of the series is:
- to allow visitors from Asian countries to present seminars in their native language;
- to provide students of Asian languages the opportunity to engage in discussions in that language and to practice their foreign language skills; and
- to offer academics and other interested persons (particularly from Asian countries) the chance either to practice their foreign language skills or use their native language.
Comparative Law Seminar Series
In 2004, the Centre launched its Comparative Law Seminar Series. This is a major series that brings specialists in comparative law to Melbourne to speak on current issues in comparative law and socio-legal theory, focusing on its application to Asia. This reflects the importance of these methodologies for the work of the Asian Law Centre, where all members and research assistants deal with comparative law on a daily basis and are deeply engaged with the theoretical implications this presents for their work.
Annual Conference
The Asian Law Centre hosts an annual conference, focusing on a different area of Asian legal studies each year.
